âWhich dress do you think I should take in for Alice?â Grace was scanning the half dozen dresses in the wardrobe she and Betsy shared. They hadnât been able to convince Alice to come home after dinner and try one on to see what needed to be done, she was too worried about leaving her precious lamb.
âProbably better to be one of mine,â Betsy replied. âYours would be a long dress on Alice, youâre quite a bit taller.â
âWhich one are you going to wear?â
âOh, I donât know.â Betsy sighed.
âItâd better be something comfortable, if William has things his way, youâre going to be dancing all night.â
âBut, Grace, Iâm engaged; Iâm in love with Roland, Iâm not going to do anything to jeopardise that.â
âBetsy.â Grace sat down and took her friendâs hands in hers. âTalking to William, even dancing with William or anyone else at the dance, is not going to jeopardise what you have with Roland.â
âBut Iâd feel like I was being unfaithful.â
âIâm sure thatâs the last thing William would expect you to be. He seems like quite a gentleman.â Grace stood back up and returned to the wardrobe, she needed to get the alterations done or they would be up half the night. âWell, I think you should wear the blue floral one and Iâll just nip in the green one for Alice, itâll match the colour of her eyes.â
âDecision made then. Thank you. What about you, what are you going to wear?â
âIâll wear my navy dress, the one with the satin bows on the sleeves.â Grace sat down on the bed with her sewing kit and the dress.
âIâm sure Bob will think you look gorgeous in that.â
âBob?â Grace had been absorbed with thoughts of Ben; sheâd forgotten Bob.
âDairy factory Bob,â Betsy reminded Grace. âYour date for tomorrow night.â
âOh him, heâs not my date,â Grace replied, as she pinned an inch-wide tuck down both side seams of the dress.
âAre you wishing Ben was your date?â Betsy asked.
âNo!â Grace snapped. The thread missed the eye of the needle.
âYou seem a little too touchy for there to be nothing between you.â
âI was just trying to thread the needle.â
âIf you concentrate on that instead of Ben, then it should be quite easy.â
Grace had to concede Betsy knew her too well. She couldnât help it, images of Ben holding her as they danced around the sitting room disrupted her concentration. She hoped being so close to him would lead to another kiss.
âNow youâve gone all dreamy-eyed. Grace, what have you done?â
âNothing.â
âWhat are you planning to do?â
âNothing.â
âGood, leave it that way, he will be gone soon. Remember.â
Grace looked across at Betsy and sighed. âI know youâre right, but itâs a bit like you and William. Something happens when Iâm around Ben and I canât stop it.â
âJust concentrate on getting him fit and healthy so he can be on his way or Iâm going to have to be taking care of you.â
âIâll try.â
Grace turned her attention to the seams of the dress, removing the pins as she hand-stitched down both sides.
